Project Overview

This project will provide additional capacity to the Northeast Interceptor system in order to convey projected flows from the villages of Dane and Waunakee and the Town of Westport. The improvements consist of the installation of approximately 18,600 feet of new sewer that will be installed parallel to or replace the District’s existing sewer that extends from the Yahara River to the Village of Waunakee.

Construction for the first phase began in October 2024 and will last until the spring/summer of 2026. Three primary stages of construction are anticipated during Phase 1:

- Stage 1: East side of STH 113 from the dog park to Kennedy Drive. Work begins in October 2024 and lasts into early 2025. A short term River Road closure is anticipated in the summer of 2025. Outside northbound STH 113 lane closure may occur outside of the afternoon traffic peak (4pm to 6pm).

- Stage 2: Kennedy Drive from STH 113 to east of the railroad. Construction is anticipated in the Spring and Summer of 2025. Kennedy Drive will be closed for up to 4 months during this time.

- Stage 3: North of Kennedy Drive to Savannah Village subdivision. Work to begin in October 2024 and will last into early 2025.

- In late 2025 or early 2026, repairs will be made to the existing interceptor that will remain in service after the new interceptor is completed and in service. These repairs are planned along the west side of STH 113.

WHAT ARE INTERCEPTORS?

An interceptor is a sewer pipe that receives wastewater from smaller local sewer pipes that serve neighborhoods or municipalities. Interceptors are the largest pipes in the sewage system and convey wastewater by gravity to pump stations or treatment facilities.

Background

Continued high growth rates in the Village of Waunakee and Town of Westport are expected to create a need for the District to add capacity to the Waunakee Extension of the Northeast Interceptor. The Capital Area Regional Planning Commission is projecting that capacity will be reached in several segments of the Waunakee Extension by or about 2022, based on population forecasts. Periodic flow monitoring performed by District staff as part of the billing program validates these projections.
